Which would you rather? A lifted outback that isn’t really that good off road and probably not that great on road, or something like a 4runner or wrangler that isn’t good on road, but much better off?

Also this

Kinja'd!!!

Doesn’t belong here

Kinja'd!!!

They don’t even have moose in Japan...or Indiana.

probably a completely different target - lifted Outback would make a nice forest road rig, decent clearance to get over debris etc but not a rock scrambler; 4runner will scramble and better offroad , but 87% of them never get off pavement...

I wouldn’t mind a lifted outback but it has to be a real outback, not that corporate-looking crap in the photo.

If I had to own only one car, probably the lifted outback.

Maybe.

I’m leaning toward the Outback. Where I live, serious off-roading is a loooooong way away. That is, if you aren’t interested in mud-bogging.

Not the Outback. It’s liable to get you stranded IN the outback.

I’m setting my hopes  high for the Jeep Scrambler. It has the potential to check a lot of boxes for me. 4 doors for the kids and hopefully a usable enough bed for camping and dump runs.

You and me both. I could see one replacing the Taco.

As my only vehicle? A lifted Outback, though I’d much prefer an older generation. As a second+ vehicle, def a 4Runner.

Hmm, why not Zoid- er both?

Our Forester goes almost everywhere easily and without drama. Pavement, rain, snow, dirt, gravel, ruts.. I’ve only turned it around once in ten years  because the road got too sketchy..

The Tacoma just goes everywhere. I don’t even worry about sketchy roads- chances are I will run out of nerve way before the truck reaches its limits.

4Runner

It isn’t bad onroad, and will do well offroad. All 3 choices hold their value very well.

Outback is more appropriate for my lifestyle and probably cheaper as well. It would make for a good daily driver and road trip vehicle that could make it through some tough places with the right setup and some effort. Wrangler would be in the same category as a track car, I'd want it to be specialized for just one purpose. So it's not a very versatile item for me to have.

This is why I’m buying a Land Cruiser, off road it’s pretty dang good, and on road the ride quality is better than 4runners and wranglers.

Given we have a lifted Forester, a lifted dual cab syncro VW Transporter and a lifted Nissan Patrol ute...

For normal daily driving...the Forester every single time. And both it and the VW have sufficient off-road chops to get to most destinations in Oz anyway.

I’m setting mine in the opposite direction in the vain hope that I will be disappointed. The compromise between a d ecent payload and typical Wrangler of f road ability might see it crueled as an actually useful utility vehicle.

I’ll always praise the 1g Xterra when a question like this comes up. Not terribly good on road, not terrible off road.

Either: non-modded outback because it is 75% as capable as a 4-runner off road and very good on road or just get a 4 runner. Adding a lift kit and AT tires on an outback is only going to get you to 80% of a 4 runner and expensive repairs like CVT transmissions and axles.

Also consider you only have 175 HP to play with so that added weight from big tires and roof boxes is going to hamper speed to the point that a Westy is going to pass you going up hills.

Yes. A good 4wd will go places that I am not going to even try.

You would be amazed where a stock outback will go on normal road tires. For sure further than I’d be willing to push it.

yup.  Thats what I always think when I see these Subarus lifted, especially here in Utah, is how much of that power is now getting to the road, cause it wasn’t a lot to start.

I have to admit that I’m not a person who modifies my cars unless there is a clear purpose and end result. So most of the time when I see modded cars and trucks I’m like you be you, but I’ll be me and have a much better driving experience because I didn’t put huge tires on my car or truck.

Exactly what I was thinking! More capability than I could ever need. So it would be completely overkill to suffer the downsides of something with more capability.
